Benefits of Supported Independent Living

by | Jan 17, 2023 | NDIS

Supported Independent Living, also known as SIL is an essential service provided by the NDIS for individuals with disabilities in Australia. The goal of SIL is to provide support for people with disabilities to live independently in their own homes or the community. Let’s find out more about Supported Independent Living and its Benefits.

What is Supported Independent Living?

SIL or Supported Independent Living is meant for those individuals with a disability who need some level of support all the time to be able to live an independent life. It provides individuals with disabilities the necessary resources and support to live fulfilling lives in their own homes or the community.

SIL can include a wide range of supports, such as assistance with daily living activities, transportation, equipment and technology, and therapy. The goal of SIL is to empower individuals with disabilities to help them live on their own and make decisions about their own lives. And encouraging them to be active members of their communities.

Are Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Different?

A lot of people tend to confuse SIL with SDA. However, these are two different supports provided by the NDIS. Let’s understand what the main difference is.

SIL or Supported Independent Living refers to the support provided to an individual with a disability to live an independent life. The SIL funding is available for people who need some form of support in their day-to-day life. The funding is available in three levels – lower needs standard needs and higher needs. Each stage represents the amount and complexity of support required by the individual.

Some of the supports included in Supported Independent Living funding are:

  • 24-hour support, including overnight (active or inactive)
  • Personal care
  • Mobility support
  • Medication assistance
  • Shopping and meal preparation
  • Domestic support
  • Therapy support

On the flip side, SDA refers to the specialised housing or accommodation provided to individuals with a disability who have high and complex support needs. People with higher and complex support needs or severe disabilities who can’t live in an ordinary home are eligible for this funding.

SDA is specialised housing designed to meet the needs of individuals with a disability with higher and complex support needs. It is worth mentioning that some people may require both SIL and SDA funding. In such cases, the NDIS will fund both services separately. An individual with a disability can access SIL services at their own home, at SDA or at any other shared home.

What are the Benefits of Supported Independent Living for Individuals with Disabilities?

Opting for Supported Ind

ependent Living or SIL can have a lot of benefits including:

  • Independence and Self-Sufficiency

One of the key benefits of SIL is that it allows individuals with disabilities to have more control over their lives. This is achieved by providing them with the necessary resources and suppo

rt to live independently, rather than being institutionalized in a care facility. This approach has been shown to improve the overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

  • Better Quality of Life

Supported Independent Living Benefits

Research has shown that Supported Independent Living can lead to better health outcomes for individuals with disabilities. A study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that individuals with disabilities who received SIL had lower rates of hospitalization and higher rates of community participation. Along with that, SIL also helps them make more friends and improve their social activities. And thus, it elevates their overall quality of life.

  • Easily Available Support

With Supported Independent Living, individuals with disabilities can avail all the necessary resources and supports they need for their independent life as and when required. From lower needs to higher needs, all kinds of support are available 24/7 so that they can start their journey of independence and lead meaningful, rich, and fulfilling life.

  • Freedom of Choice

With the SIL, the individual has the right to choose the type of support they need. They decide how much support they require and when. SIL gives them choices and control over their own lives and decisions.

  • Cost Efficiency

Another important benefit of SIL is that it can help to reduce the cost of care for individuals with disabilities. By providing support in the community, rather than in a care facility, the cost of care can be reduced significantly. This is beneficial for both individuals with disabilities and the government, which funds many of these programs.
